Adopt-a-Day of Disaster Relief The American Red Cross of Cortland County is proud to introduce a new program called Adopt-a-Day of Disaster Relief. This program encourages local businesses around Cortland County to make annual donations of $55 to the American Red Cross. That small amount of money will help one family victimized by disaster, for one day. Donations cover the cost of food, shelter and other basic necessities that may be lost due to disaster. 2007 Adopt-a-Day of Disaster Relief Contributors: A.L.A Tech, LLC Cayuga Medical Center at Ithaca Cortland Dental Cortland Eye Center Cortland Repertory Theatre Cortland Valley Dairy Service Cortland Veterinary Hospital Dale Davis The First Bank of Dryden Gabriel's Auto Electric Goldwyn & Boyland Physical Therapy Higgins Supply Company, Inc. McNeil Development Company Natrium Products, Inc. O'Shea Tire Service Center Sabach Design Syracuse Federal Credit Union Wright-Way Oil Here in Central New York, house or apartment fires, flooding, and winter weather storms are the most common types of disaster. Just last year, the Cortland County American Red Cross responded to 20 fire disasters, including the infamous Clock Tower Fire. Supposing that 20 different families were affected by those, it would cost over $1,000 to provide each of them with just one day of disaster relief. Keep in mind though, that some families require more than just one day of disaster relief, which raises the bill. For the American Red Cross, recent scale backs in grants and funding has made helping people in their times of need increasingly difficult, but this is where local businesses can help. Adopt-a-Day of Disaster Relief is a great opportunity for local businesses to give back to the community and make a difference in the lives of disaster victims. All money donated through this program stays right here in Cortland County, ensuring that the money will go toward helping your own friends and neighbors when they're down and out. Businesses that decide to "adopt-a-day" will be recognized as sponsors in the 2007 Annual Report, the Cortland Standard, and on the Cortland Chapter's web page. Companies will also be presented with a certificate recognizing their status as Adopt-a-Day of Disaster Relief sponsors.
